Poll Results
For quite a while now, we've had a "What is your favorite Cat Breed?" poll on our site. We took it off today, and would like to share with you the results. Haven't taken it yet? It's not too late! Click here to take the poll.
But anyway, now to the results.
In first place, your favorite breed was the Persian, with 41.67% of the votes.
In second place, we had the Siamese, with 33.33% of the votes!
In third place, we had a three-way-tie between the Maine Coon, Sphynx, and Ragdoll, each one claiming 8.33% of your votes.
Here's a visual of the poll results:
Although no one voted for the Birman, this doesn't mean that the breed is not worthy of recognition here. :)
Thanks to all who voted, remember, it's not too late to vote!

Cat Trees Galore!
It's amazing how many different types of cat trees you will find in a pet store. But which ones will your cat like? We've created a list of a few of the different kinds of structures that there are to choose from, and given you a little narrative about each.
First, we'll talk about the scratching posts. If your cat doesn't scratch on scratching posts, but rather on other surfaces such as furniture and rugs, then you have a problem. One of two things are most likely what happened.
1. Your cat doesn't know how to scratch on a scratching post. For help with this, you can check out our "Your New Kitten" tab. Once on this tab, you can look under the heading "Scratching Posts" to find information on teaching your cat to scratch on the right surfaces.
2. Your cat doesn't have the correct scratching post material for their liking. We can help with that. There are three main types of scratching surfaces for cats: sisal, cardboard, and carpet.
This is a picture of the sisal option. It's classic and a great option to take. We are pretty certain that this is a popular choice among cat lovers, but just to make sure, please vote in the poll about which surface your cats like to scratch on the most. However, we do know some cats that refuse to scratch on sisal. If this might be the case with your cat, here are other options...
This is a cardboard scratching surface. These have also been very popular with cats. Some particular cats (owned by EverythingCat101 Team Members) really enjoy this type of scratching surface. In the long run however, this option may turn out to be costly, because the cardboard part needs to be replaced once it's worn out. The good news is, your cats can use both sides before you buy a new one.
Some cat trees have a carpet scratching post like the one above. Some people don't like this option because it may make cats think it's okay to scratch on the rugs, but this hasn't been a problem with our cats. So choose wisely! Which one will you pick?
Look at the previous picture. (the one about the carpet scratching surface) This is a great example of a cat tree with lots of sleeping places--great for multi-cat houses. But you may find that your cats always want to sit on the top. That's normal. Being up higher than other cats is a way of a cat showing the others that he/she is cooler. So naturally, cats will want to sit on the top. Some cats can find a way to fix this...
... but that doesn't always work. Here are some more options of cat trees and cat beds...
Think about what will work best for your cat(s) and make good choices! We hope this helped you out in making good decisions when it comes to pampering your cat(s). :)

Fun Fall Cat Activities
It's always cute when you see cats dressed up for Halloween, but the truth is, not all cats like that. What can you do with your cat to celebrate the season? Well, here are some ideas...
Cardboard Jack-o-lantern
Materials:
1 medium cardboard box
1 scissors
Some markers
Cat toys
A cat to join in the fun!
Optional: non-toxic paint (orange)
What you do:
Using a marker, draw a jack-o-lantern face on the box. Cut out the eye holes, mouth, nose, and anything else you may want to cut out. You may want to consider the mouth being big enough for your cat to get through. Decorate the box with markers (or orange non-toxic paint) and place cat toys inside. Then let your cat explore!
Knitted Cat Toy
Materials:
Yarn (preferably orange or black to go with the season!)
Knitting needles (any size)
Knowledge on how to do the Knit Stitch
Crochet Hook
Catnip (optional)
What you do:
Cast on. (Cast on as many stitches as you think will make a good sized cat toy.) Knit a medium sized square. Bind off. Attach tassels to the edges using a crochet hook. Tassels will get your cat's attention. You should make the toy one color, and the tassels another. (if you want to get fancy, :) that is!) Cats LOVE yarn, so this toy should be a big hit in your house. If you want to, you may rub catnip on the toy to make it more interesting.
Cat Pilllow
Materials:
2 pieces of felt
Lots of fiberfill
1 sewing needle
Some thread
Optional: Pieces of felt to make a design on top of the pillow
You may need scissors
What you do:
Lay the two pieces of felt on top of eachother. Sew together three of the edges. Fill up the pillow with fiberfill, and sew together the remaining edge. If you want, you may sew a design onto the top of the pillow with felt. You can give the pillow to your cat, or you could display it!
These are just a few ideas to get you excited about fall. Feel free to make up your own. Good luck!

Word Puzzles
As some of you might have noticed, there is a new gadget on the left side column that is titled "Word Puzzles." To clear up any confusion, here is how those word puzzles work...The puzzles are literal interpretations of cat-related words. Some examples of common words and the explanations are listed below.
- Lamotherw-the answer to this puzzle is "Mother in law" because the word "mother" is "in" the word "law." Here is the puzzle again, but split up so that you can see the answer... La-mother-w
- Another example (though it cannot be shown here) would be if the word "head" was on top of the word "heels." This puzzle answer would be "head over heels."
- T
O
U
C
H This puzzle's answer is "touchdown" because the word touch is written going down.

Today is National Cat Day! We hope that you are going to do something to show your love for cats even if it is just spending a little more time with your beloved cat. We collected some cat rescue stories that are posted below, but first, we'd like to make this announcement: Because of the black cat being a symbol for halloween, some people have associated black cats with evil purposes. This superstition has caused some black cats not to be able to find nice homes. However some studies have shown (but not proven) that cats with black fur might generally have better behavior. And speaking of black cats, if you own a black cat they would make a great Halloween picture to send in for the Halloween photo contest!
But back to the cat rescue stories! Here are some of the cat rescue stories we've collected...
A cat named Buddy was saved by HART from a rural shelter after his owner became ill and couldn't care for him. Buddy was adopted February of 2011.
A cat named Smoky was rescued off the streets and nursed to health.
A cat named Ellie was rescued from an adoption event where she was being mistreated by a mean cat.
A cat named Boog was rescued from living outside after she had continually showed up at a particular house over and over.
A cat named Lucky was rescued from a parking lot full of people but she belonged to no one. He was very scared but turned out to be a very nice cat. He almost didn't make it because he was sick but turned out ok.
For more cat rescue stories visit: http://www.our-happy-cat.com/cat-rescue-stories.html
More stories will be posted throughout the day so keep checking back. Remember-it's not too late to send in your own cat rescue stories. All we need is your cats' name and where you rescued him/her from. Have a great National Cat Day!

National Cat Day!
In just five days it will be National Cat Day, a day to celebrate our feline friends! What will you do on National Cat Day, to make it special?
We, at EverythingCat101, will be posting cat rescue stories on the home page. But we can't do it without your help! Do you know a cat who was rescued? Send us the story of how they were rescued! We don't need your name for this, but we do need the cat's name. You can send in your stories from now until National Cat Day, including sending them in ON National Cat Day.
We look forward to hearing your stories, and our goal is for them to inspire people to rescue cats. Interested in rescuing a cat? HART is a no-kill rescue shelter that is very popular among people that want to buy pets. http://www.hart90.org/
So don't forget: Send in those cat rescue stories-they don't have to be about your own cat! We need as many as we can get. Thanks!

Contests, Contests, Contests!
Thanks for all your interest in our site! We're glad to hear you're enjoying it. Today we'd like to talk about the contests on our site. There are currently two contests going on right now, you can find these under the Contests Page. There are also a few "mini-contests" that can be found in other places. For example, there is a contest on the right hand column of our site that has a picture of a cat with a speech bubble above their head. The deadline of that contest is TODAY! OCTOBER 10, 2011 IS THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS TO THAT CONTEST. WE NEED MORE PARTICIPATION!
Also, in the post below this, submit your comments about what to do for National Cat Day.

New Pages and National Cat Day
Over the weekend, we've made many additions to our site. Be sure to check out the current contest, and the tips for understanding your cats' behaviors. New things will usually be added as we're perfecting the site, so check back often!
Anyway, an important day is coming up this month... NATIONAL CAT DAY! National Cat Day is on October 29th this year! For information on National Cat Day, you can visit this website.
What will you do on National Cat Day? We'd love to hear your ideas! Comment on this post with your ideas on what cat lovers can do to celebrate this day. Note: Not all comments will be posted due to moderation. We do not allow any bad language or negativity. Please be polite to the other users on this site and make sure that what you write won't be offensive to anyone. Thank you!

Happy Fall!
Happy fall, cat lovers! Here are some simple cat toy ideas that cats absolutely LOVE! They're all easy-to-make and cheap.
If you have any old socks lying around the house, you can fill them with catnip and tie them at the end. Unfamiliar with catnip? Catnip is a plant, and most cats love the smell of the plant's leaves. You can get this at most pet supply stores. SAFETY ISSUE: We wouldn't suggest that you draw on the socks with markers or dye them in case your cats lick the sock while playing with it. The smell of the catnip should be enough to excite your cat(s).
Cats love yarn, and fishing-pole type toys are great for interactive play. Tying a long piece of yarn to the end of a wooden dowel works perfectly for this purpose. If you want, you can tie a catnip sock (above) or another small cat toy to the end of the yarn.
Crumpling up a piece of paper or tinfoil is lots of fun for your cats to chase around the house. But beware: when you decide to move furniture around you may find a bunch of these toys underneath couches and coffee tables!
Reduce, reuse, recycle! Believe it or not, cats like to play with stuff that you would normally throw away, or leave lying around your house! Bottle caps, wooden spools, ponytail holders, and arts-and-crafts pipecleaners all make fun toys for cats.
And when you want to buy some new toys for your cats, check to make sure that they don't have any parts that could easily come off while a cat is playing with it.
Here are just a couple precautions to take while giving toys to your cats...
Make sure nothing you give to them is small enough to be swallowed.
Don't leave any stray strands of yarn lying around the house! Cats can swallow these and choke! Supervise your cat when they play with small object or with yarn.
Good luck with your toy-making and have a great fall!
All of the ideas shown here have been tested with multiple cats. For more simple ideas, cardboard boxes are found very entertaining. Children can decorate the cardboard boxes with markers before they are given to the cats. Always supervise play with boxes-never give your cat a plastic bag for safety reasons! But paper bags are safe and work well for play.
