New Year's Eve...

Here it is... New Year's Eve... the end of EC101's first full year as a website! We've decided to piece together some highlights from the year as a reminder of everything we did.

January...
We posted our second "Which Cat Breed are You Most Like?" quiz! If you haven't taken it yet, do so by clicking here!

March...
Our contest was a huge success! Site viewers were challenged to come up with creative newspaper headlines/captions for a photo we posted on the contests page. And in...

April...
We had a vote among our viewers, and the winner of the contest was Maroonie=)'s submission of "It's a bird! It's a plane! It's SUPERCAT!" To see the runners up, check out the Contests page.

June...
We announced our challenge to come up with reasons why cats rule (shouldn't be too hard ;D) and posted it on the contests page. It's not really a contest because it never ends, so if you've got a reason to submit--it's never too late to do so!

July...
We celebrated summer with spotlights on certain cat breeds, polls, crafts, fun facts, photos, and even some charitable giving! Our MAKE A DIFFERENCE contest was a great success, and in...

August...
We held a bake sale to raise extra funds. By the end of the contest in...

September...
We ended up donating $106.75 to the Snow Leopard Trust! Thanks again for all of your help and support!

October...
We made a neat National Cat Day animation and posted lots of Halloween-related things.

December...
As the year comes to an end, we'd like to thank all of our viewers for supporting our site. We couldn't have done any of this without you.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Happy Holidays!

It's time to get into the holiday spirit! Here are some cute photos of our cats that are holiday-themed. If you have some photos of your cats that you'd like to share, feel free to email them to everythingcat101@gmail.com and let us know if we can post them!

And the snowcat...

How to make the snowcat:
1. Roll a medium-sized ball of snow to be the body. Roll a smaller one and place it on top to be the head.
2. Make two small snowballs and put them in front of the cat to make two paws. Make a snake-shape out of the snow and put it behind the cat to be a tail.
3. It's time to decorate! Snowcat's face can be made with all-natural materials...
-We used two blueberries for the eyes and nose, but you could use small pebbles instead.
-A little forked stick makes a great mouth!
     -Pine needles are cute whiskers.
-We used half of square-shaped crackers for ears, but there are some triangular crackers that would probably work as well.
-And finally, we used a long blade of grass around the neck to be a collar.

Have a purr-fect holiday season, cat lovers! Check back soon for a collection of the year's highlights posted on this page.

It's November!

Happy November, cat lovers! Get ready for a fun-filled month!

We'd like to bring a wild cat fact to your attention today. Did you know that there are less than 40 Amur leopards left in existance? That's about 30 Amur leopards left in existance. That is a very low number.

What can you do to help?
  1. Raise awareness! Tell your friends and family about the needs of Amur leopards.
  2. Adopt an Amur Leopard! Of course, we don't mean literally, but you can make a "symbolic adoption" by donating money to the WWF to help Amur Leopard conservation. To learn more, click here.

We've done it before, and we'll do it again--let's make a difference for the better!

Happy National Cat Day!

It's National Cat Day today!

Some of you may be wondering what exactly National Cat Day is. Well, you're about to find out.

National Cat Day is a holiday to raise awareness for homeless cats. According to http://www.nationalcatday.com, approximately 4 million cats are brought into shelters every year. That's a lot of homeless cats.

But as cat lovers, we can change that. Adopting a homeless cat, volunteering at your local cat shelter, or donating money are all great ways to help homeless cats.

Today, let's show our appreciation for all the people that make a difference for those poor cats. If you know someone that helps out at a shelter, let them know how much it means to you! And next time you see your cat's veterinarian, make sure to thank them for all that they do.

Inspiring Cat Quotes

Here are a few inspiring cat quotes to brighten your day...

"Way down deep, we're all motivated by the same urges. Cats have the courage to live by them."
     ~Jim Davis

"The really great thing about cats is their endless variety. One can pick a cat to fit almost any kind of decor, color, scheme, income, personality, mood. But under the fur, whatever color it may be, there still lies, essentially unchanged, one of the world's free souls."
     ~Eric Gurney

"Time spent with cats is never wasted."
     ~May Sarton

---And finally---

"Since each of us is blessed with only one life, why not live it with a cat?"

$$$--Where's it going?

We've already told you that the money raised through the MAKE A DIFFERENCE program this summer is going to the Snow Leopard Trust. But we wanted to stop any confusion about the Sponsor A Wild Animal Kits.

The Snow Leopard Trust does have a Sponsor a Snow Leopard program, but we are going to use the one associated with WWF--the World Wildlife Fund.

This charity offers a much wider selection of wild cat species that we could sponsor, including cats like the lion, tiger, and of course, the snow leopard.

With that in mind, if it happens that we are going to get a Sponsor a Wild Animal Kit, we are going to need your opinion on which wild cat to sponsor.

Leave a comment on this post to tell us your choice. Here are the choices...

  • Lion
  • Tiger
  • Snow Leopard
  • Amur Leopard
  • Cheetah
  • Black Jaguar
  • Clouded Leopard
  • Lynx
  • Jaguar
  • Cougar
  • Leopard

MAKE A DIFFERENCE charity

The results of the poll are in--viewers have decided to raise money for wild cats!
First of all, we want to make one thing clear--THIS DOES NOT INVOLVE YOU PAYING ANYTHING. We are donating to the charity based on the outcome of our contest posted on the MAKE A DIFFERENCE page. Of course, if you would like to donate on your own, feel free to do so. :)
We're sure that many of you want to know where all of the money's going. Well here's the answer: the Snow Leopard Trust.
The Snow Leopard Trust is an organization in Seattle, Washington that is interested in saving snow leopards. The truth is, these wild cats are in desperate need of our help.
Snow leopards are considered an endangered species for many reasons, poaching being one of the largest. Plus, the loss of habitat and prey forces snow leopards to move to other places, or worse, starve. Believe it or not, mining also is a threat to these cats. Miners use chemicals and explosives in the areas where snow leopards live.
Those are just a few of the reasons why snow leopards need our help. Not to mention that there are as little as 4,000 snow leopards left in the wild. So let's MAKE A DIFFERENCE now and start saving these amazing wild cats. What's the first step? Entering the contest, of course! Visit the MAKE A DIFFERENCE page to take a step toward changing the world--and the lives of these wonderful, wonderful creatures.

To check out what the Snow Leopard Trust is all about, visit their homepage at www.snowleopard.org.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE contest now posted!!!!!

The MAKE A DIFFERENCE contest is now posted on the MAKE A DIFFERENCE page! Check it out to help wild cats!

Here's how:

If we get 1-10 entries, we will donate $15 to a wild cat charity.
If we get 11-20 entries, we will buy a $25 Sponsor A Wild Animal Kit.
If we get 21-30 entries, we will donate $30 to the wild cat charity.
If we get 31-40 entries, we will donate $40 to the wild cat charity.
If we get 41-50 entries, we will buy a $50 Sponsor A Wild Animal Kit
If we get 51+ entries, we will donate $60 to the wild cat charity.

Super Summer--Saturday Spotlight

We're sorry for the delay in this Saturday Spotlight... maybe it would be better to call it a Sunday Spotlight this week!
But no matter what we call it, this week the spotlight is on the RAGDOLL!

Ragdolls are very social cats and enjoy being wherever their owner is. These cats should be regularly combed to keep their silky fur looking beautiful.

Many social Ragdoll cats have been trained to do tricks such as coming when they are called, and fetching.

Ragdoll cats are slow to mature, they don't reach their full size until they are four years old! Here is a picture of some Ragdoll kittens...

Here are two more videos of Ragdoll cats that have been trained.

Thanks for reading another Saturday--or Sunday--Spotlight! For more information on Ragdolls, visit the "Cat Breeds" page!

Did you know...

House cats have about 473 taste buds!

Cats' eyes typically glow green when in the dark, but sometimes they can glow red.

Every cat in a household should have their own food bowl and litterbox to prevent disagreements.

Super Summer--Saturday Spotlight!

This Saturday, the spotlight is on the SPHYNX! Sphynx cats are arguably a very interesting cat breed because of their lack of fur. Cats without fur, like the Sphynx, are called "hairless". However, Sphynx cats could still have a little bit of fur that is not very visible.

Since these cats do not have fur, they need bathe regularly and get their ears cleaned. Here's a video of a Sphynx cat in the bathtub--this breed seems to actually enjoy it!
After all, if a cat has been raised taking regular baths, it is not a hard task to get them to like water. Another neat thing about this cat breed is that some people that are allergic to cats can live with them. Of course, it all depends on the seriousness of the allergy.

Sphynx cats like being the center of attention and are very curious. These cats are very energetic, as this cat demonstrates...
Although some people think that Sphynx cats are ugly, they are actually very popular. Most Sphynx breeders have waiting lists for their kittens.

No matter what some people think about this cat breed's appearance, there's more than meets the eye to Sphynx cats! Check back next week for another Saturday Spotlight!

Super Summer--Saturday Spotlight

This Saturday, the spotlight is on AMERICAN CURL cats! These cats are special because of their curly ears. Did you know that when American Curl cats are born, their ears are straight? It's true! Their ears don't begin to curl until they are two to seven days old. The curl in their ears is permanently set when they are four months old.

Source: An American Curl Cat. N.d. petlittle.com. Cute and Funny Animal Wallpaper, n.d. Web. 14 Jul. 2012.
American Curls are social, creative, intelligent, and playful. Here's a video of an American Curl cat that has been trained to roll over...

The next two videos show how playful and curious these cats can be. American Curl cats like to know what you are doing and perhaps even "help out" as well.

"American Curls are not just 'decorator' cats; they are 'designer' cats - signed masterpieces of a humor-loving Creator."
~Joe and Grace Ruga (Curlniques Cattery)

Super Summer--Saturday Spotlight

This summer, EC101 is going to put a spotlight on a cat breed every Saturday. What does this mean? This means that you can learn cool facts about this cat breed and see some funny pictures and videos featuring this breed.
This Saturday, the spotlight is on MAINE COONS! Maine Coon cats are known for being kind, loving, and smart. These cats generally don't have trouble living with dogs or children.

Here's a funny video we found on YouTube that shows just how smart Maine Coon cats are...

Did you know... Maine Coon cats are widely admired for their beauty?

Maine Coons have lots of favorable qualities such as being kind. This Maine Coon cat shows lots of patience when "attacked" by a little kitten:
